A Brief and Intuitive Theory of Everything

Over the past century, physicists have transformed the human quest for truth into a concrete search for a so-called theory of everything. They have not, however, been able to come up with anything that either makes sense or is testable. They also haven’t been able to connect their prospective ideas to anything of practical significance to humans. In this short talk, our speaker will propose a way to unify physics – both qualitatively and quantitatively – in a clear and testable way that has direct implications for everything that matters to humans.

This seemingly implausible task will be accomplished by marrying two of the most fruitful mathematical frameworks in theoretical physics. The first of these is known as the two-state vector formalism, according to which both the past and the future have a causal impact on the evolution of a quantum system. The second framework is string theory, the leading candidate for a quantum theory of gravity whose multiple dimensions and holography seem to defy understanding. In the talk, our speaker will bring these two frameworks together and generalize them to conjecture one of the most startling symmetries in the history of science. The proposed symmetry is not only immediately intuitive and testable, it also accomplishes the long-sought goal of grand unification and has practical implications for everything we care about.
