"Working on these models definitely feels like being on the side of the angels." - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

AI priests, ChatGPT sermons, Roko’s Basilisk, murder cults, chatbot psychosis, transhumanist tech start-ups, a billionaire's lectures on the Anti-Christ. These are strange days we're living in.

Artificial intelligence and its possibilities for human progress have been a focus in Silicon Valley for decades. Tech leaders envision endless potential uses for AI, including a future where humankind is forever intertwined and changed by technology, which is increasingly conveyed through religious language. Perhaps as an unintended consequence, the rise of AI chatbots has created an opportunity for the development of delusions and reinforcement loops in vulnerable individuals, giving rise to religious delusions that can turn violent.

Why are there so many connections with AI and religion? What do religious leaders have to say about it? Can humanity create an all-knowing, all-powerful, all-benevolent artificial superintelligence with the capability to oversee the long-term future of our planet? If we can, should we?
