Joey & Anitra will be sharing a talk: AR "Lessons Learned: UX Challenges in AR kit for phones"

WHAT WE'LL LEARN
Now that smartphones have processing power that rivals laptops, cameras good enough to shoot commercial films, sensors that would’ve been science fiction when the first browsers came out, and are owned by more than 3 out of 4 Americans, augmented reality (AR) is both figuratively and literally within arm’s reach. Like other major milestones in user experience — interactivity, the GUI, multimedia, and mobile — AR presents an opportunity to redefine existing applications, create new application categories, and provide new user experiences.

Anitra Pavka and Joey deVilla will provide a brief overview of AR and its history (which includes the author of “The Wizard of Oz”). They’ll go over the fairly new user interface guidelines set out by AR platorm makers like Apple and Google, show what smartphone hardware and OS features can be used in creating AR experiences, and suggest ways in which you can apply your existing knowledge to this new area, where the world is your user interface. They’ll also present current applications that make good (and bad) use of AR, as well as some homemade AR apps that you can download and try out for yourself!

Anitra Pavka is a technial product manager at Malwarebytes, where she works with the team that developer their consumer anti-malware product used by almost 15 million people. She was a contributing author to O’Reilly’s HTML5 Cookbook, and is a three-time speaker on accessibility and usability issues at SXSW Interactive.

Joey deVilla is the lead product manager at Sourcetoad, and a mobile app developer on the side. He’s part of the author team at the mobile app development tutorial site RayWenderlich.com. He recently gave a half-day workshop on Apple’s ARKit at the RWDevCon conference and is the organizer of Tampa iOS Meetup.
