Asemic Art Tarot Workshop

Details
This workshop invites tarot readers of all skill levels to engage with their cards in a new, imaginative way by responding to the symbols, imagery, and feelings of randomly pulled cards through abstract mark-making.
Whether you’re new to tarot, asemic art, or both, this workshop offers a welcoming space to explore how intuitive and symbolic interpretation can extend beyond words. Together, we will use the cards as inspiration for creating art that blends writing-like forms, symbols, and textures into something deeply personal and open to interpretation.
This workshop emphasizes playfulness and creativity over technical skill, making it ideal for beginners in both tarot and art. By the end, you’ll have new ways to approach your tarot practice and a piece of unique art that captures your personal response to the cards.
For examples of asemic art, check out the work of Renee Gladman and Cy Twombly!
Bring your favorite deck, writing or drawing tools, an open mind, and a willingness to experiment—let’s explore where tarot and asemic art can take us!

For all of our events:
Since we have gone online, feel free to invite friends from anywhere!
A few expectations to know before you join us:
- Arrive on time; no one will be permitted past the first 15 minutes.
- Be camera ready; we are a small group that aims to hold a space of trust. We warmly welcome newcomers to participate—not to watch us anonymously.
- We welcome all levels of tarot readers—from beginner to professional—and activities are designed accordingly. Those new to tarot will receive ample support.
We will meet via Zoom. We are new to the Zoom platform so your patience is appreciated!
While there is no fee for this event, there is a suggested donation asked of $5 to $10 to cover the Meetup fees which now include Zoom.
If you are able to contribute any amount, it is greatly appreciated.
Donations can be offered here: Venmo or PayPal/Credit/Debit
Hope to see you there!

About your event leader: Kimberly Essex is an artist, poet, professional tarot reader, and meditation teacher who began the Tarot for Creatives Meetup as an offering to her new community when she first moved from NYC to Philadelphia in 2018. The group met monthly in Center City until it was moved online at the beginning of 2020. While the membership is still primarily based in Philadelphia, being online has allowed others to join from anywhere in the world. Being online has also made it possible to offer a wider variety of events including reading, writing from, and meditating with the Tarot. All events are beginner-friendly--no tarot, writing, or meditation experience is needed. If you have a tarot deck, you are welcome to join in.
