Please join us at our first group museum visit! Together we will check out the "Ideas of Africa" exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. This exhibit explores how portrait photography in Africa in the mid-20th century embraced the international spirit of the time. The photos in this exhibit are interesting because they were taken in the backdrop of decolonization, the US Civil Rights movement, and the idea that ordinary citizens can participate in the co-creation of a new political reality. After viewing the exhibit, we will gather to share and discuss our thoughts. We will also check out the participatory space in MoMA where you can create your own portrait if you like.

See the links below for more info on both: https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5755 https://www.moma.org/calendar/exhibitions/5901

Please note:

  • Each of us will need to buy our own ticket to get into the museum. You can purchase your ticket in advance, or in-person at the museum. Tickets for adults are $30, with discounted tickets available for students and seniors.
  • Join our WhatsApp group for timely day-of updates. This is where we will send messages before and during the meetup: https://chat.whatsapp.com/JaDEi8sLcVo4Qg3a7YhJVO?mode=gi_t
  • Museum closes at 5:30pm. We recommend coming earlier than the meetup to take advantage of your ticket and check out the other parts of the museum.

Exact meeting location to come (likely in the lobby!). Hope to see you there!
