Long Form Genre Plays – Jane Austen Unscripted starts May 23rd, 2026!
Saturdays, 6–9pm – (Final Showcase Date TBA)

Step into a world of drawing rooms and country estates… of wit, longing, manners, and social intrigue.

This 3-hour workshop series explores how to create fully improvised stories inspired by the works of Jane Austen — blending Regency-era romance, sharp social observation, emotional restraint, and character-driven storytelling into elegant long-form performances.

Across the series, you’ll learn how to:

• Build nuanced, period-authentic characters

From clever heroines and reserved gentlemen to meddling relatives, charming rogues, social climbers, officers, widows, and matchmakers. Learn how to use voice, posture, status, and subtext to create grounded Austen-style relationships.

• Craft romance, misunderstanding, and social tension

Explore narrative structures that drive Austen stories:

the social world → the first impression → the growing attraction and complications → the emotional revelation.

• Create compelling Regency settings and situations (without props)

Ballrooms… rainy walks… awkward dinners… inheritance troubles… secret engagements… scandalous letters.

Learn techniques to bring them vividly to life through ensemble support, environment work, and emotional specificity.

• Use classic Austen themes to shape your scene work

Pride, class, reputation, marriage, family duty, restraint, self-awareness, and romantic transformation.

We’ll translate these into playable scene dynamics and long-form story engines.

• Build atmosphere through language, physicality, and stage picture

Drawing from period drama, theatrical realism, and classic literary adaptation, we’ll create stylized worlds that feel emotionally truthful and deeply human.

• Work in an ensemble to deliver layered, satisfying stories

We’ll develop a Regency-inspired long-form format for the final performance — a night of original improvised Austen-style romances, rivalries, and social entanglements created by the class.

Who This Series is For

Improvisers with some scene experience who want to deepen character work, explore romantic and social storytelling, and perform rich narrative long-form.

Fans of period dramas, literary adaptation, and emotionally intelligent comedy especially welcome.

Final Student Showcase

The series culminates in a public performance where the ensemble presents
“Jane Austen Unscripted” — an improvised evening of wit, romance, misunderstandings, and heartfelt resolutions.

Workshops are held at Studio Gokko near Yoyogi-Koen and Hatagaya, close to the restaurant Hoff, and this 3-hour workshop costs ¥4,000. Bring exact change if you can, please. And careful with the map here on Meetup! Some report it leads them to the next street over. Use this Google location if you have any problems: https://goo.gl/maps/w4f6GgXbYG5u2YvW7

Thanks,
Chris

Apres-improv Socializing
After the workshop, students can walk across the street to Hoff, a great restaurant for food, drink and conversation, so it's educational and social!

The Improv Foundation Workshops are open workshops, so any native-level English speaker is free to come and give it a try.

Diversity Policy

We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, regardless of minority status. Continued participation is at the discretion of the instructors. So be positive and nice to your fellow improvisors! Also, we're all adults here, but hitting on people isn't cool in a workshop. Just saying.

PS: Studio Gokko is about a ten-minute walk from the following stations: Hatsudai, Hatagaya, Yoyogi-koen, and Yoyogi-hachiman.

The GPS should take you right there, but just in case, we are very close to a restaurant called Hoff: http://hoff-restaurant.com

TCS Studio Gokko is in the basement of an orange-tiled building with a cleaners and glass shop on the first floor, and our door is on the very left-hand side, next to the glass shop, which has グラス written on its shutter. Look for the Studio Gokko logo on the door!
