Topic of Main Talk - Fostering Accountability in Software Engineering Teams

What happens when engineers feel safe to own their mistakes, raise flags early, and commit fully to the team's mission? This talk explores the real power of accountability in modern software teams—not as blame or punishment, but as a lever for velocity, trust, and continuous learning.

In this session, engineering leader David Muchatibaya walks through real-world strategies, frameworks, and psychological dynamics that separate average teams from great ones. Expect thought-provoking insights, interactive moments, and practical takeaways you can apply immediately.

You’ll explore:

  • How accountability boosts software quality, team cohesion, and delivery speed.
  • Why psychological safety is a prerequisite for high ownership.
  • What game theory teaches us about team trust and blame culture.
  • How leaders can model, scale, and systematize accountability.

David Muchatibaya is an Engineering Manager at Ozow, where he leads the Payments Engineering department—a team responsible for building and scaling Ozow real-time digital payment systems. Operating in a fast-paced, high-stakes fintech environment, David is on a continual journey to foster a culture of accountability, ownership, and quality among engineering teams.

With a background in backend development and several years of engineering leadership, he's passionate about mentorship and enabling developers to grow into confident, high-impact contributors. His focus is on creating environments where learning and delivery go hand in hand—even under pressure.

Fun fact: Outside of work, David enjoys trying new things—whether it's cycling, riding motorcycles, working out, or planning his next travel adventure. He's also a huge Mission: Impossible fan and never misses a chance to channel his inner Ethan Hunt when navigating complex technical challenges.
