Topic of Main Talk - From Zero to Two in a Highly Regulated Environment.
Building a fraud prevention product from scratch is one thing. Doing it in real-time, across emerging markets, under the weight of financial regulation, is another entirely.
This talk is an account of what it looks like to go from zero to a live, production system: the early MVP, the decisions that aged well and the ones that didn't, and the shift from "make it work" to "make it scale." Jethro will walk through the tension between shipping features and building foundations and what it means to be thoughtful about both when the stakes involve real money and real compliance obligations.
He'll also share a candid, work-in-progress note on the engineering culture Orca is still actively shaping and what kind of engineers thrive in that environment.
If you've ever wondered what it takes to build something fast without building something fragile, this one's for you.
Jethro Muller is the Founding Engineer at Orca Fraud, where he's building high-performance real-time fraud detection infrastructure for financial services across emerging markets. A UCT Computer Science Honours graduate, Jethro brings deep experience across Go, TypeScript, and Python — with a track record spanning fintech, cloud infrastructure, and AI tooling. He's the kind of engineer who cares as much about the systems that support a team as the systems that power a product.
