Topic of Main Talk - Manager of One

It doesn’t matter whether you head up an entire organisation, or work as an individual contributor – there’s always going to one person’s schedule, time, responses, development, and career that you’ll be forced to take full accountability for (spoiler alert – it’s your own). And if you’re not actively thinking, learning, and growing in how to manage yourself, you’re highly unlikely to be well equipped to effectively manage others. Timeless leadership and management skills are as applicable to our own lives and careers as they are to those we lead, and – in this talk – I’ll share some of the lessons, frameworks, and ideas that have most impacted how I lead and manage myself and (as a consequence) how I try to lead and manage others.

As an engineer at heart, I can’t help but look at any system through the lens of how it can be made more efficient or effective. When I entered the tech world, I soon realised that the glaring gap was rarely in the technical capability of the people who build the software, but more so in their ability to collaborate and coordinate effectively across domains, stacks, timelines and (perhaps most importantly) personalities. And I’ve spent the better part of my career learning, thinking, and trying to assist in bridging that gap.
