Talk 1: Patterns for building, maintaining, and scaling large systems
Stuart Layton, Engineering Lead @ HubSpot

The HubSpot CRM is a distributed database built from HBase, MySQL, ElasticSearch and Kafka. The surface area is large, with a system that spans hundreds of deployables and 10s of TBs of data. Over the last several years we have developed tried and true patterns for building, maintaining, and scaling large systems. In this talk, I'll share these key learnings and how they've enabled a relatively small team to be successful in the face of huge customer growth, ample tech debt, and an evolving product.

Talk 2: Scaling for SAAS
John Doran, Director of Engineering @ Phorest Salon Software

This talk will cover the growth of the Phorest product over the last 12 years - from startup to 5,500 customers and how the system has evolved.

It will touch on:
-- Moving from a monolith to a distributed infrastructure using Docker after we hit major scalability issues with our product
-- How we are rebuilding our legacy frontend application by moving it to be a distributed, web-based application with the aim of increasing engineering productivity, shipping cadence & velocity and allow us to scale the business more effectively
-- Smoothen the process involved in scaling and managing the system for our users by utilising serverless technologies

Takeaways: I’ll demonstrate some practical tips you can re-use to help scale your platform.

Talk 3: Building search for humans: search relevancy and language processing
Olga Shestopalova, Global Search Tech Lead @ HubSpot

Data is everywhere, but unless you can search and find what you need, that data is virtually worthless. There are a plethora of search problems that exist, such as finding the right Amy in a sea of Amys, correcting typos, analyzing text the way a human would, and more. We'll share how HubSpot solves these search problems for over 2 billion stored contacts in a customizable and intelligent manner.
