The Rise of Digital Twins: Promising new HPC, VR, AR and MR Insights

Our focus last time was virtual labs offering 3D VR simulation and manipulation of molecules, enabled by modern cloud infrastructures with super-computer performance characteristics. Such high-performance infrastructures are necessary when one starts to simulate thousands and millions of interacting atoms so as to see the characteristics of Nano-structures, as was demonstrated during the symposium.

Virtual Labs can be viewed as Digital Twins: Simply put, a virtual lab is the digital twin of a real lab. But there are several kinds of digital twins like the “Digital Twin of Organizations” that Gartner has started talking about.

This time, we will take a brief look at the all kinds of digital twins, including Digital Twins for Organizations (or for Operations, abbreviated DTOs), show some examples, and then discuss the requirements/facilitators of large-scale multi-domain digital twins like High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures, alternative 3D VR, AR and MR device technologies, as well as development, deployment and management platforms for Digital Twins.

If there is an audience for it, we will also discuss potential new business areas & markets of digital twins, both for established businesses and for startups.

We will try to reserve some time for fun as well so that you can try the VR equipment and the Virtual Lab.
