Get inspired by the story of Stevie - a socially assistive robot - designed by Dr Conor McGinn and his team, to help seniors by engaging with them socially as well as physically particularly in care homes.
In March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Conor and his team began drawing up plans for a new robot. They knew how effective UV-C light was as a disinfectant and seized the opportunity to incorporate navigational features they’d designed for Stevie, with a UV-C light. The new robot, Violet, doesn't have any human-like features and is designed to work alongside humans.
There's lot's to discuss!
What positive role can robots play in solving the current challenges facing our world? What's unique about robots? How can they augment rather than replace human kind? How smart are they? Where do they fit in the field of artificial intelligence - AI? Where is the HOPE for social transformation using AI and robotics - now and in the future?
These questions and more will form the basis of this important event concerning the place of technology in a better world for all!
Dr Conor McGinn is an award-winning robotics researcher and entrepreneur. He is an Assistant Professor at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and also a co-founder of Akara, a robotics start-up with a mission to develop technology that empowers front-line healthcare workers. In 2019, Conor was named by MIT Technology Review as one of the leading innovators in Europe under 35. In 2020, JCI Ireland selected him as one of the ten outstanding young persons of the year.
