Join Tech in Motion + Verizon at Helen Mills’ beautiful theatre space on West 26th Street for our next tech talk. Our panelists will be discussing topics ranging from recent changes to the design process to the importance of UX today and how UX impacts today’s consumers. We’ll even peek into how our ever changing data and infrastructures impact design.

Tech in Motion Events is always working towards creating innovating networking events for you - the Tech community here in NYC. We are broad by design, the goal of this group is to be interactive and allow technology enthusiasts to learn from other professionals, have questions answered in real-time, discover new tech and hear stories that inspire. This group is a place for technology professionals who wouldn’t normally cross paths to meet, collaborate and learn about what their peers are doing across the city.

Panelists

• Danny Setiawan, Lead UX at The Economist

Danny Setiawan currently works as Lead UX at The Economist, looking after mobile products. Previously, he worked for Yahoo! and has done work for other major brands like MSN, Disney and Sony. Danny is a with expertise in building UX team, processes and products that deliver value to end-users and the business with minimal resources (the lean way).

• Chris Nordling, Lead User Experience Architect at Macy’s

Originally trained as a glassblower, Chris Nordling realized there was more money and fewer burns in computer work. After a quick transition into the 21st century he worked his way up to Creative Director for various corporations. After the first internet bubble burst, he made the decision to go into User Experience to have a greater say in the design of desktop and mobile apps. His work experience includes Microsoft, UnitedHealth, Citibank, startups, non-profits, and the Federal Government; he is currently a Lead User Experience Architect for Macy’s, in charge of the ux for Digital in Store apps and the new Magic Lab.

• John Walker, Director of Operations Technology for Verizon Wireless

John Walker serves as the Director of Operations Technology for Verizon Wireless. With a diverse background leading teams across Network Engineering, Strategic Planning, IT and Operations, he is currently responsible for Performance Management and Design Execution of Verizon’s retail stores, agent locations and telesales channels. John and his team are specifically focused evolving the customer experience. Whether it be developing innovative new sales systems or injecting new technology into existing processes and interfaces, his focus is ensuring the simple and fun experience for the customer. John is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh with Master’s Degrees in both Strategic Planning and Finance.

• Jess Brown, Director of User Experience for Vice

Jessica Brown works as Director of User Experience at VICE Media, where she leads the digital design team. Her focus is to showcase VICE’s distinct storytelling across mobile, web, and TV apps. Previously, she worked at Rent the Runway, where she established UX and user research practices to improve the customer experience. Her academic background is in math and computer science, which she couples with human design methodologies to solve users' problems through technology.

Moderator:

Jessica Bates, Director of Research Practice at Motivate Design

Jessica Bates works as a Senior Design Researcher at Motivate Design. Her focus has been on using applied and collaborative methodologies to problem solve within communities, with clients, and for end-users and customers. She has a background in Anthropology and Psychology, and has worked in both client-side and agency roles in research, UX, innovation, and strategy.
