Topic: DSLs and Interpreters for Application Developers
Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are everywhere in software: query syntax, report builders, workflow designers, validation rules, configuration files, and visual programming tools. Teams often create their own DSLs without recognizing them as languages, gradually turning behavioral configuration, custom query builders, validation rules, and workflows into increasingly complex systems. Through practical .NET demonstrations including a calculator, an advanced search language, a reporting DSL, user-defined workflow rules, and a visual authoring layer, this session explores when a small, intentional DSL can be simpler than another layer of configuration or application logic and introduces the basic mechanics of scanning, parsing, abstract syntax trees, and interpretation.

Eric Smith is a Principal Consultant with Strategic Data Systems in Cincinnati. Eric specializes in .NET line-of-business applications and is experienced with batch processing and data ingestion. He is a life-long computer nerd with a passion for collecting and programming computers from the 70s and 80s. Outside of computers, he has 30 acres of woods to clean up and makes his own maple syrup every winter.
