Technology and Society Reading/Discussion - Bangkok

In an age when information moves faster than ever, why is so much of it bad? How has the way information moves in society changed over history? And as we rearrange and access information in a novel way due to AI, how does the information landscape look going forward?

"Nexus" by Yuval Noah Harari (author of Sapiens and Homo Deus) attempts to answer these questions with a broad view of historical developments related to how information flows. Join us as we read and discuss the book for the April meeting of the Technology and Society book club.

Whatever happened to privacy?

Plenty of voices warned us about where the Internet was headed with regards to our personal privacy and anonymity. One such voice was that of David Brin, who wrote "The Transparent Society: Will Technology Force Us To Choose Between Privacy And Freedom?", published in 1999. For the May meetup of the Technology and Society reading and discussion group, we examine ethical issues surrounding privacy through this historic lens, asking how past perspectives can inform the present.

In New York and Baltimore, police cameras scan public areas twenty-four hours a day. Huge commercial databases track you finances and sell that information to anyone willing to pay. Host sites on the World Wide Web record every page you view, and “smart” toll roads know where you drive. Every day, new technology nibbles at our privacy.Does that make you nervous?
