About us

What is the purpose of the group?

I'm a born and bred Londoner. I come from a big family, and I've always had plenty of friends, ranging from people I grew up with to friends from work and others I've met along the way.

But life changes.

Friends develop their own responsibilities, relationships and families. Circumstances change, priorities change, and sometimes your own life changes too.

I reached a point in my life when I actually stopped looking forward to weekends. Not because I didn't have friends, but because I knew I had no plans, or, if I did, often nobody was available to spend that time with.

How many museums, galleries or theatre shows do you really want to go to on your own?

I was lonely, despite not really being alone.

And I'll be honest, I felt too ashamed to admit that I was lonely.

Now I realise there is absolutely no shame in feeling lonely. It's more common than we think. What matters is recognising it and, when we're ready, doing something to change it.

I joined Meetup, and it changed the status quo.

I got out more, tried new things, expanded my social circle and met people I would never otherwise have encountered.

I even met the woman who is now my wife, not directly through a Meetup group, but it played a part in our story :)

You might be new to London, work from home, be newly single, have friends whose lives have moved in different directions, or simply want to meet some new and different people.

Sometimes you can have friends, a busy life and a good social network, yet still find yourself with a free Saturday or Sunday and nobody available to spend it with. It's more common than you think.

The purpose of Lonely London is simple: get out, go for a walk, breathe fresh air, do something interesting, meet different people and enjoy good company.

It's about turning spare time into something positive and healthy, expanding our social circles and making London feel a little more friendly.

Who is it for?

It is for anyone who wants more people, experiences and variety in their life.

Maybe you're feeling bored or have more time on your hands than you'd like. Perhaps you're new to London, work from home, are newly single, have friends who are busy with work and family, or you've simply realised that you'd like to expand your social circle.

You might already have plenty of friends but want to meet different people from different backgrounds, professions, ages and walks of life.

It's for people who enjoy walking, exploring, discovering London and trying something new.

You don't need to be the most confident or outgoing person in the room, and you certainly don't need to bring somebody with you.

Come on your own; that's exactly what the group is designed for. But friends are welcome too!

What will we do at the events?

Events are based on interesting walks through different parts of London, 10,000-step, or roughly 3.5/4 hours of history and culture, parks and green spaces, hidden neighbourhoods and opportunities to discover places you may never have visited before.

Others are shorter, just a good excuse to get out of the house and spend a few hours in the company of others.

While walking, the conversation happens naturally along the way.

Events normally finish with an optional coffee, lunch, pub visit or drink.

This isn't a dating group and it isn't a loneliness support group.

It's simply a chance to see interesting places with interesting people.
