What we’re about
This meetup group is designed for people who enjoy hiking, caving, camping, backpacking, and spending quality time in the outdoors. Our group name only suggests where we we begin---because we routinely explore parts of Eastern Tennessee, North Georgia, South Central Kentucky, North Alabama, and have embarked on occasional events further from home. We're even thinking of hiking Mount Saint Helens with a profession geologist. Events primarily consist of hikes, but we do have the occasional non-hiking activities such as biking Cades Cove on Wednesdays, scuba diving, repelling, whitewater kayaking, river kayaking, simple walking and social events. If anyone wants to participate in any other activates just let us know. We have a pretty active calendar, with many events from which to choose. We plan to expand our horizons and have plenty of activities for everyone, beginner and seasoned explorer, alike!
We have a Facebook page where members may post, show, and discuss their experiences easily with friends and family who are not members of THG. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TenneseeHiking/
Membership is free. However, we appreciate a $5 donation upon joining, and once a year, to cover the continuing cost of gear, etc., used expressly for the safety of our members.

Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area in Lebanon is considered one of the best preserved Native American villages in the Southeast.
Sellars Farm State Archaeological Area in Lebanon is considered one of the best preserved Native American villages in the Southeast. It features a 15-foot mound on which was built a structure of some importance -- believed to be a ruler's dwelling or perhaps a council house or place for religious ceremonies.
Join Ranger Jason, seasonal interpreter at Long Hunter State Park, for a relaxing sunset stroll to explore this area's diversity. While it's still light out, we'll take in some of the natural wonders, including wildflowers, unique trees and scenic Spring Creek. Then we'll hopefully enjoy a nice sunset and visit the mound and discuss its history. Finally, we'll walk a bit in the darkness to enjoy the peaceful surroundings -- and if we're fortunate, we may hear a night critter or two!
The trails here are flat, and total hiking distance will be less than two miles. Don't forget water and insect repellent. No pets, please.
Feel free to bring a flashlight or light source, but our goal is to adjust our eyes to the dark and walk the trail without light as much as possible.
Please keep in mind this will not be a fast-paced hike. We will stop often to study and enjoy the area's natural features.
Directions:
Sellars Farm is located on Poplar Hill Road in Lebanon, Tennessee. From Interstate 40 take exit 239. Head east (Hwy 70 E) toward Watertown. Go approximately 1.8 miles, turn left on Poplar Hill Road, go about 0.4 miles, entrance to gravel parking lot will be on the left.
