Museum day trip to Mathematikum Gießen
Details
It‘s international Museum Day this Sunday, many Museums offer special events such as guided tours. Many Museums in Frankfurt also participate but since we just had Museum night and can go anytime, let’s head to Gießen, 50km north of Frankfurt, instead.
Meeting point: 11:10-15 at the beginning of platform 14 in Frankfurt Hbf. We take RE30 departing 11:20 with final stop Gießen, reaching 12:03. Participants from Gießen can meet us 12:05 or so in front of the station. Look out for a little Meetup sign. Those without Deutschlandticket can share a Hessenticket to limit transport costs (~8.5€/person if shared by 5).
Our main destination is Mathematicum Museum, which is just 3 mins walking from the station. Today it has free entrance. Its displays try to make the dry topic of mathematics more tangible, including hands-on interactive exercises. Special exhibition is on optical illusions. Among the special events at the museum today is a magician performance at 1pm.
We will stay in the museum until around 2pm. There is no lunch planned before, so either have a big latish breakfast or bring your own food to have on the train.
After the visit, you can head to the station and return to Frankfurt, eg by RE30 at 13:54 (in Frankfurt 14:39) or RB41 at 14:22.
Alternatively, some of us can walk to the centre, grab late lunch, do some sightseeing and for whoever still has energy, go to the old palace, around 1km from the Mathematikum, to quickly look at a few paintings and other exhibits plus some exhibits about Germany‘s stony way to its first parliament. This would be a short visit of maybe 30mins (or 45 if we opt to go up the palace tower).
For the late group, the return connection would be RB37 at 16:32, reaching Frankfurt after 5pm.
