Here are more details about our two speakers:

Jochen Leidner, Director, Research, Research & Development, Thomson Reuters

Text analytics at Thomson Reuters
Thomson Reuters is an information company that develops and sells information products to professionals in verticals such as Finance, Risk/Compliance, News, Law, Tax, Accounting, Intellectual Property, and Science. In this talk, I will describe how making money from information differs from making money from advertising, and the role of state-of-the-art text analytics techniques in the process will be described using some case studies. In addition, I will compare and contrast our industry research work with academic research.

Chris Brew, Senior Research Scientist, Research & Development, Thomson Reuters

Text analytics for educational testing

Especially in the US, standardized educational tests are used on a large scale, with the aim of providing fair and effective means for educational decision making. Multiple choice questions are reliable, fair and easy to grade automatically, but it is also desirable to include questions that require written responses, because these are more like real-world tasks. But written answers are much harder to grade, so ETS and other test providers have been building automated grading systems built on special purpose text analytics. I will talk about the systems that were built (at ETS and elsewhere) for two Kaggle challenges sponsored by the Hewlett Foundation.
