Café Scientifique organises talks, usually given by scientists, followed by questions from the audience in the second half. They are a great opportunity to explore the latest ideas in science and technology, you don't need to be a scientist to enjoy the evening, everyone is welcome to ask a question or make a comment. Join us for tonight's talk:

“If you take a walk in a British woodland, you will come across a handful of the 120 tree species found across temperate Europe.
In contrast, in a tropical rainforest, you will be surrounded by hundreds, possibly thousands, of the 50,000 tropical tree species estimated to occur globally. This startling difference in diversity has fascinated scientists for decades, with many trying to answer the question –
Why are there so many tree species in the tropics?

Join Dr Matt Greenwell as he takes you into the jungle to explore some of the drivers of this hyper-diversity. In this talk, you’ll discover the role that insects, pathogens and other natural enemies play in the maintenance of tropical biodiversity and gain an insight into the ups and downs of conducting research in a rainforest.

Speaker: Dr Matt Greenwell

Matt is a tropical field ecologist and lecturer at the University of Reading teaching on their Ecology and Entomology courses. He has spent over a year of his life living, researching and working in a Panamanian rainforest.”
