Essex Hemphill: Take Care of Your Blessings at the Phillips Collection

The Phillips Collection has recently launched its new exhibition, Essex Hemphill: Take Care of Your Blessings. The sub-title is a phrase commonly used by Hemphill, a Black gay poet and essayist who grew up in Washington, DC and wrote fiercely and stirringly about issues of sexuality and race before his early death from AIDS. The exhibit features Hemphill's work in dialogue with the work of artists who knew him in the 1980s and early '90s, and with contemporary artists influenced by his words and ideas.
