One of the classic midcentury lesbian novels was The Price of Salt, written by Patricia Highsmith under the pseudonym Claire Morgan in 1952. This film adaptation from 2015, Carol, was nominated for 6 Academy Awards, including for its screenplay and the acting performances by both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. It provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on both the personal difficulties and triumphs of lesbians and gays living in a more directly repressive time -- one to which we are hopefully not returning.
