The Nickel boys by Colson Whitehead
Details
in June we will read a dramatic but powerful book, written by one the most famous author of his generation, Colson Whitehead. This american writer is one of the only four writers who won the Pulitzer prize twice. He won the prize the first time for his novel « The Underground Railroad » published in 2016 (later adapted into a movie) and he won the prize the second time in 2020 for his novel « The Nickel boys ». In this novel, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another part of American history through the story of two boys sentenced to a hellish reform school in 1960s Florida, during the Jim Crow era. Whitehead never exaggerates the tale that emerges, he let his characters speak for themselves. Despite of the violence and the suffering, strong friendships will be forged and become real means of survival.
