Algorithms: how and why and when should we trust them?

Algorithms define our lives now. What you see in your Facebook feed, what items appear on store shelves, what rate you pay on your student loans - all decided by black-box systems that are definitionally outside our ability to know or understand. So the question is: how much do we trust and utilize them? When and why and how do we push back against their use?
