Venice Florida Rookery Nature Photo Walk

Feb 7, 2024 Update: I went to the Rookery today and there are two nesting pairs of Great Blue Herons with chicks and another pair building a nest! One nest which is very close for photos has an active chick who was standing on the edge of the nest like it was posing for pictures. There was also a lot of other bird activity at the site. I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Saturday, the weather looks great.

Join us for a photo shoot at the Venice Rookery. The shoot will focus on identifying birds at the rookery, equipment recommendations, and techniques to capture still shots and birds in flight. There should be nesting Great Blue Herons and other species with chicks present, as well as the resident 10 foot alligator. The Venice Rookery offers the perfect opportunity for beginners as well as advanced photographers to capture images due to the closeness of the nests. This site is a regular stop for bird photographers from around the world.
The Venice Rookery is handicapped accessible, has ample parking, maintained portable restrooms, and a covered pavilion with tables. A long telephoto/zoom (300mm plus) is recommended, but due to the close proximity of the birds, great shots can be had with just about any camera configuration. We will meet in the pavilion at one of the tables.
