April is National Poetry Month and we’re kicking off the celebration with a fun approach to writing poetry with some inspiration from writer Austin Kleon. Austin is the creator of Newspaper Blackout, a style of poetry created using a newspaper and a Sharpie marker. Sometimes the hardest part about writing is trying to find those first words to put on the blank paper. So he suggests starting with a page full of words and just start crossing off the ones you don’t want! So join us as we find poems in unexpected places. We’ll start off the evening with an introduction to the process and share some examples. Then we’ll each grab some pages and a pen and try our hand at blackout poetry. We’ll finish up with a reading of some of our masterpieces (this is optional, you don’t have to share your work if you don’t want to).

We also thought it would be fun to share some appetizers and drinks. Feel free to bring a dish or beverage to share (if you’re drinking, we ask that you please be responsible and arrange for a designated driver if needed. Anyone drinking needs to be 21+ years old. )

There’s no need to bring anything, unless you want to participate the in potluck. We will supply Sharpie markers and a plethora of book pages, magazines and newspapers so that you have a wide array of places to try your hand out blackout poetry.
