Introduction to 3D Game Development with Unity

The gaming industry is booming at the moment and provides a very valuable pathway for developers and entrepreneurs alike to harness creativity and engineering skills for the creation of fast-moving products. The undoubted market leader for game development is the cross-platform Unity game engine & platform, used by over 1.5 million active creators monthly and responsible for powering over 50% of mobile, PC and console games on average, including more than half of the top grossing mobile games globally as well as over 90% of content for emerging augmented reality platforms. The company behind the engine, Unity Technologies, was founded way back in 2004, but surged after Facebook integrated a Unity SDK in 2013 and the success of Pokemon Go in 2016, and went public in 2020 with a $13.6bn valuation.

In this session, we’ll show you how to create your first game using the Unity platform. We’ll build a simple 3D top-down shooter game using C# and the Unity engine. You’ll learn how to import animations and 3D models as well as sound effects and music, script interactions and goals through code and finally package the game to share the experience with your friends.

This hands-on session will be presented by Mustafa Sibai, an experienced game and full-stack developer who has founded his own independent game studio in the UAE called Blue Monocle Software. Mustafa also teaches game development at the SAE institute, and will showcase for the community both his technical know-how as well as his experience as a regional startup founder in this burgeoning area.

• Basic coding experience with any programming language
• A laptop with Unity installed
