Warm up your body and your imagination in a pre-Boogie one-hour workshop in Action Theater improvisation. Find your groove through simple, fun exercises playing with movement, sound, and language that will turn up the volume on your senses and spin out the stories your body wants to tell! No experience needed.

The workshop will be followed by open fresstyle dancing starting at 8pm. We're also fortunate to have resident artist Stewart Hoyt creating boogie-inspired (and inspiring) drawings, projected on the big screen in real time to juice up the atmosphere.

We provide a safe, casual, alcohol-free environment where folks can freely express themselves in movement. People of all ages are welcome. Come alone or bring your friends. You'll find folks at the dance moving solo, with partners, and/or in groups. Wear comfortable clothes; you can dance barefoot but footwear is also allowed on the dance floor.

Rachel Cohen is a performer and choreographer living in Brooklyn. A certified Action Theater improvisation teacher, she began studying with the form's creator, Ruth Zaporah, in 2006. Rachel and her dance-theater company, Racoco Productions, have explored the symbiosis of people and things for 30 years in projects including dough, clay, taffy, gum, paper, wood, dirt, pinatas, vacuum cleaners, bathrobes, a cotton candy machine, and 25 oversized flower pots. Her work, and her teaching, emphasizes investigation, imagination, and empathy.

Action Theater is an improvisational physical theater training, created by Ruth Zaporah, that offers pathways into imagination, mindfulness, sensitivity, and audacity while honing awareness of space, time, and form. It is amazing training for performers; it is also amazing training for life.

If you are doing the workshop, please arrive by 7pm and wear comfortable clothes. Then stay with us for a night of conscious dance and fun All are welcome to dance, connect, and groove in a safe, cool and inclusive environment as our DJs spin energizing beats that will get you moving and lift your spirits.

Shoes are optional at this casual and alcohol-free event. Bring your friends or make new ones at The Barefoot Boogie!

Entry fee is $10-$20 at the door (sliding scale). Proceeds go to benefit the Camp Friendship Food Pantry to assist local families in need.
