It is much more than the sun sign columns found in newspapers and magazines. Whether you are just starting to learn or are a professional astrologer, this is where everyone speaks the same language. Everyone is invited to ask questions on any level, share observations, and exchange ideas. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and if you are interested in presenting a lecture or discussion topic, please contact the organizers. In this talk, Joey Cannizzaro will explore the ancient meaning of time lords, which is a crucial but enigmatic aspect of forecasting and timing techniques in ancient astrology.
The English phrase “Time Lord” is the most common translation of the original term chronokrator but it inevitably conceals nuances in the Greek.
What’s lost in this translation of χρονοκράτωρ is the semantic richness of the term κρᾰ́τωρ, krắtōr. There are numerous other words for lord, leader or ruler that might have been employed when ancient astrologers coined this neologism. It’s a significant literary and spiritual statement that astrologers chose this specific suffix, krắtōr, which sounds so similar to kratēr, the ritual wine-mixing vessel that was the fulcrum of the ancient Greek symposium.
Puns and close homonyms (paronomasia) are moderately frequent in Hellenistic Greek literature as well as the New Testament, functioning as deliberate rhetorical, mnemonic, and theological tools rather than meaningless jokes.
The wine vessel was employed as a metaphor for time by ancient astrologer Vettius Valens (120 – 175 AD). In a passage of his famous anthology, Valens explores the wine vessel as a symbol for how students of astrology might use or misuse time in the pursuit of their studies. Predictably, there has been a tendency to project the patriarchal notion of a masculine king onto “Time Lords” / chronokrators. However, the embedded pun leads us closer to the figure of the symposiarch: the person charged with mixing wine at a feast and distributing it to attendees. The symposiarch facilitated the drinking games, flirtations, gift exchanges, seating chart, and managed the flow of tensions during the symposium.
What if Time Lords (“Chronocrators”) in ancient predictive astrology aren’t demagogues or kings, but symposiarchs mixing each of our fates according to their own unique natures, motives, and passions? Through semantic slippage and dream logic, this talk somehow arrives at a compelling historical root for this idea, reconsidering astrological time through the lens of the krater (or ancient Greek wine-mixing vessel) and extending this into a framework for divination and interpretation.
Beyond its application in predictive and natal astrology, this framework might contribute something valuable to practitioners of astrological magic and ritual and inform larger discussions about the nature and quality of time. Also, it’s fun to think of the planetary gods this way—as our divine bartenders and masters of ceremony rather than authoritarian lords—and perhaps it can help us practice meeting the events of life without an attitude of control and domination ourselves.
