Astrology is an excellent practical and useful tool for understanding ourselves, our motivations, and the universe around us. It is much more than the sun sign columns found in newspapers and magazines. Whether you are just starting to learn or are a professional astrologer, this is where everyone speaks the same language. Everyone is invited to ask questions on any level, share observations, and exchange ideas. Everyone is encouraged to participate, and if you are interested in presenting a lecture or discussion topic, please contact the organizers. We are open to considering astrology-based ideas of all kinds.

This talk will introduce us to a thread of the astrological tradition that is seldom explored in America – the intersection between astrology and Sufism.
During her studies on the astrology of the Ottoman Empire, Barış İlhan gained a new perspective on Mars and Saturn, known as malefics, from the 13th century astrologer and polymath Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī. While explaining planetary powers, Tusi offered a unique ethical framework to become more cognizant of the influence of Mars and Saturn, and to thereby to better manage them. Although Tusi’s astrological writings have not yet been translated into English, these moral guidelines are well explained in his Nasirean Ethics.
In this presentation, Barış İlhan will combine this perspective from Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī with her long-standing research on integrating Sufism into horoscope interpretation. She will tell us about the effects of these two planets, known as inauspicious ones, on solidification, generation and growth during our lives here on earth. You will leave this talk with a new set of ideas to navigate Mars and Saturn in your chart.
