July book selection: A Mermaid in Paris by Mathias Malzieu

Our July book comes from France and it is set in Paris :=) the most romantic city they say...
So yes! We will delve into a love story! But is this novel really above love?

About the book
It’s a romantic fantasy about Gaspard, a heartbroken musician in Paris who no longer believes in love. One night, he finds and rescues an injured mermaid named Lula from the Seine and hides her in his home while she heals.
Lula has a dangerous secret: any man who falls in love with her dies. At first, Gaspard seems immune because of his past heartbreak—but as they spend time together, they slowly fall in love anyway.
The story follows their bittersweet relationship as they struggle between love and survival, ultimately showing that love can be both magical and painful, but still worth risking.

About the author
Mathias Malzieu, born in 1974 in Montpellier, is a French writer, musician, and filmmaker best known as the lead singer of Dionysos. His creative work often moves between music and literature, and he frequently adapts his own novels into films, including A Mermaid in Paris. Malzieu’s style is distinctly poetic and oneiric, blending elements of fantasy with everyday life to create modern fairy tales. His stories typically explore themes of love, fragility, and melancholy, combining imaginative, magical ideas with emotional depth and a slightly dark, whimsical tone.
His fame grew further when he began writing novels, especially with The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart (La Mécanique du cœur), which was a major success and later adapted into an animated film.
He is definitely regarded as a multitalented storyteller.
