Presentation: Advanced Monitoring and Detection on Linux-based workloads in AWS: What to do when you don’t own the network infrastructure

An in-depth discussion on the future of smarter monitoring and detection on Linux-based workloads in AWS. When deploying in hosted cloud environments such as AWS where your organization doesn’t own the network infrastructure, there needs to be a level of monitoring and auditing on the host which can compliment -- or even exceed -- the visibility you get from traditional network intrusion detection tools.

Amazon prescribes a shared responsibility security model and Linux servers are the predominant OS run on AWS EC2 instances. Jen will dive into how auditing system activity is an important facet of the customer’s responsibility using this environment. She will also discuss the current auditing solutions that exist today on AWS and the advantages and limitations they have in terms of performance, collection and querying.

Presenter: Jen Andre

Jen is the co-founder of the cloud security monitoring company, Threat Stack. Previously, she worked in Symantec's Managed Security Services division and then moved to their development team. Prior to that, she was on Mandiant's Research and Development team developing innovative tools to analyze malware.

Jen is passionate about bringing incident response and security monitoring techniques to ordinary developers and operations personnel through better UI, automation and analytics, and likes to blog about her thoughts around software development and the state of security in the cloud.

Presentation: Effective Ways to Leverage a Hyperscale Public Cloud
There are a number of effective ways to leverage a hyperscale public cloud like AWS. In our discussion, we will focus on the scenario where AWS is effectively an extension of your production infrastructure hosted outside of AWS. Well-suited use cases for this type of AWS implementation include DR/BC for your production systems, and File DR/Archive for your unstructured file data. Mr. Madhu will review the AWS architectural and commercial framework elements that make these solutions particularly appealing (such as storage tiering, judicious use of compute, and workload right-sizing), and the technical requirements necessary to implement the solutions effectively. As the CTO of OneCloud Labs, his focus is on building a policy-based software platform that automates these use cases, and he will share the product considerations and decisions he has made in this interactive session.

Presenter: Suresh Madhu, Founder & CTO, OneCloud Labs

Suresh conceived of the idea behind OneCloud when he saw that no company was truly addressing the need for organizations to simplify and manage on-premise and public cloud based elements elastically. He is a software architect and brings an extensive skill set ranging from distributed computing, networking, virtualization and cloud computing. Prior to OneCloud Labs, he was an early member of VMWare’s vCloud team. Prior to VMWare, he was a principal software engineer at F5 Networks which acquired Acopia Networks, where he was a key contributor to their flagship ARX product series. He has held a variety of senior engineering roles in various startups in the networking and storage industries.
