This months talk(s):
Talk 1 - 7:00 PM
Title: Beyond the VPN, the shifting perimeter to remote post covid by Macy Cronkite
Abstract: Suddenly many security organizations have had to pivot from defending a physical network to protecting a virtual or remote workforce network. Traditional security postures usually take into account Virtual Private Networking (VPN) use cases, but those legacy Security Information Event Management (SIEM) rules may not have taken into account the full suite of remote access options, such as Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), or multifactor systems like Okta and RSA, which leave a potential security gap in end-to-end user activity and security event visibility. In the current work environment, customers are seeing these challenges exacerbated in a big way. In this talk we’re going to provide a methodology to assess where the visibility gaps are, incorporate new data sources into Splunk Enterprise Security (Correlations and Data Models), and communicate the new extended posture to your leadership.
Speaker Bio: Macy Cronkite has been in IT/Security for 25 years and is currently a Splunk Principal Architect. She is also Boston BSides Founding member.
Talk 2 - 7:45 (Lightning Talk)
Talk Title: Achieving Least Privilege by Yaro Taeger
Abstract: The principle of least privilege is well established in the security industry. We will discuss two approaches for achieving the principle and the implied impacts on risk and usability for each.
Speaker Bio: Yaro Taeger is an engineer passionate for excellence in operations through people, process and enterprise software.
