Blindspots of Atheism - Philosophy of Religion Part 1

Details

It's time to philosophize with a hammer.

This session, we'll examine the way of thinking in the classical western tradition (and in our meetups) itself! Around the turn of the 20th century, some philosophers began developing a double critique of - what we may call - atheism/secularism/rationalism/naturalism/...:

1. Monotheistic religion has had a gigantic, mostly unnoticed, impact on modern society and continues to influence our thought patterns and values.

2. The secularization of modern society is causing us to miss something important which religion used to point to.

Together, we'll explore these two seemingly contradicting statements and more specific questions brought up by authors/philosophers like Fyodor Dostoevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Martin Heidegger and Keiji Nishitani a.o.:

- Is liberal democracy monotheistic?
- Is our thinking too dualistic?
- Do we expect too much of rationality?
- Are we too afraid of suffering/discomfort?
- Are we missing mysticism/spiritualism?
- What is the differences between philosophy and religion?

Whether you are religious, atheist, agnostic or something else entirely, come and join this inclusive group-reflection to get closer to the truth of our existence - and try to arrive 15 min. before the start of the meetup so you can get a drink before we start :)
