The Capablanca Club
A society of the unhurried move. Chess, and other slow pleasures. By invitation only.
The Capablanca Club is a society for the playing of chess and the keeping of unhurried company. It has rooms in Dubai. It has had rooms elsewhere, and may again; the Club takes a long view of geography, as it does of most things.
We meet periodically. Members arrive when they arrive. The first hour is rarely spent playing, the last hour rarely spent leaving, and the chess, when it happens, is taken seriously by some and as cover by others. Both are correct.
The standard of play is higher than the room lets on. We have a prodigy who is bored of winning, a banker who plays like she is settling a score, and a barman everyone assumes cannot play, wrongly.
The Club keeps a reading lounge, a piano that is leaned upon rather than played, eleven clocks that disagree, and a best chair that belongs to no one. The ashtrays are immaculate and have never been used. There is a cap museum, of a sort. The Chairman is upstairs, and signs things, and is not often seen.
Membership is by invitation, kept deliberately below capacity, and extended slowly. We find the room is improved as much by who is absent as by who is present. If you have been invited, you will know. If you have not, this will read as a pleasant mystery, which is the intention.

The Capablanca Club convenes in Dubai for an evening of chess on Wednesday 22 July at eight o'clock in the evening.
Members are reminded: Invitation is necessary. Black tie is optional. Prompt arrival is expected. The Chairman has, for the seventeenth consecutive year, threatened to give a speech, and may or may not be persuaded against it.
No standard is required and none is assumed. Boards are provided. Members are not obliged to win, or to play, or to speak.
The Evening:
8:00pm: Arrival, and the room settles.
8:30pm: Play begins.
10:30pm: Play continues, for those still inclined.
11:00pm: The evening closes.Admission
