The Johannesburg Bookclub – Cape Town Chapter: The Quiet Violence of Dreams
Details
The Johannesburg Bookclub – Cape Town Chapter
June 2026 Meetup
This month, we are reading The Quiet Violence of Dreams by K. Sello Duiker, one of South Africa’s most powerful and thought-provoking literary voices.
Set in post-apartheid Cape Town, the novel follows Tshepo, a young man navigating identity, belonging, trauma, sexuality, race, mental health, and survival in a city filled with both beauty and contradiction. The book is emotionally intense, deeply reflective, and unafraid to explore uncomfortable truths about society and the self.
For this session, we invite readers to come prepared for an open and respectful conversation around:
• Identity and self-discovery
• Masculinity, vulnerability, and belonging
• Mental health and emotional struggle
• Cape Town as both a setting and a character
• Dreams, survival, and the search for meaning
Whether this is your first time reading Duiker or you are revisiting this South African classic, this discussion promises to be rich, reflective, and engaging.
