The goal for the Palmetto Trail is to establish and maintain a continuous 500-mile trail across South Carolina from the Intracoastal Waterway (Awendaw) to the Blue Ridge Mountains (Walhalla). At present, there are 380 miles of completed trail, consisting of 31 passages ranging from 1.3 to 47 miles. Marie Butler, who coordinates the Palmetto Trail from Buck Hall to SC-601 near Eastover, began working with the Palmetto Conservation Foundation seven years ago after retiring from the Forest Service. She loves spending time on the trail, spotting wildflowers, mushrooms and wildlife on each outing, and introducing hikers to the beauty and diversity of woodland trails. Marie will provide an overview of the Palmetto Trail, describe recent and upcoming projects and volunteer opportunities, and share details about some of her favorite sections of the trail.
