Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston

In a life spanning 69 years from 1891 to 1960, American intellectual Zora Neale Hurston was an anthropologist, folklorist, documentary filmmaker, and prolific writer. Her most popular novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, tells the life-story of Janie Crawford, an African-American woman in early 20th Century Florida. The novel was controversial at the time of publication in 1937 with critics deeply polarized over its merits. But today the novel is widely considered a classic of the Harlem Renaissance.
