We will be discussing Chapters 58 to 61 of Roughing It by Mark Twain. (Free at https://www.marktwainproject.org/writings/roughing-it/chapters/roughing-it-chp-58/ ) First published in 1872, Roughing It is Twain’s account of some of his hardscrabble days in the American West during the 1860s, when mining booms and rapid growth were shaping Nevada and California. In these chapters, we find Twain living in and around San Francisco and trying to make a living as a journalist, while also dealing with his forray into post-Gold Rush mining speculation and irregular work. The chapters portray how unstable California life during these early years could be—people making and losing money quickly, jobs coming and going, and plans not working out as expected. Twain writes from direct experience, including his account of a San Francisco earthquake. Rich or poor, in good times or bad we always find in Twain's autobiographical writing his deep appreciation for the humanity he saw in everyone he met. They recount a clear, first-person view of the colorful California of the day, as recounted from memory by one of our greatest ever story tellers.
Hope to see you there.
