Meister Eckhart

At our next Western Civilization meeting, we’ll study Meister Eckhart, the influential German Dominican theologian, preacher, and mystic who lived during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Eckhart sought to describe how the human soul might encounter God directly, not only through religious observance but through profound inner transformation. We’ll consider his reflections on detachment, humility, the “ground of the soul,” the birth of God within the soul, and the possibility of finding the divine in ordinary life and action. We’ll also discuss why some of his teachings were controversial and why his thought continues to appeal to readers both within and beyond the Christian tradition. Please join us if you can.
