Akira Kurosawa's epic war film Ran (1985), loosely adapted from William Shakespeare's King Lear, is one of the great Japanese filmmakers' most entertaining and acclaimed movies. It was nominated for multiple Oscars (including a Best Director nomination) and won for costume design.
