Plot Summary: Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) is living the American dream with a good job, a nice house, and his wife Emily (Julianne Moore), his high school sweetheart of 25 years. His life unravels when, during a family dinner, Emily reveals she has had an affair with her co-worker David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon) and wants a divorce.

A devastated Cal moves out and begins spending his nights at a bar, wallowing in self-pity. He is noticed by Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling), a handsome, suave womanizer, who decides to take Cal under his wing. Jacob gives Cal a complete makeover and teaches him how to be a "player" and pick up women. Cal's newfound confidence leads to a string of one-night stands, but he eventually realizes he still loves Emily and wants her back.
