Discussion Night: Pride and Humility

Details
It has been a long time since we had a discussion on a fixed topic -- let’s revive the tradition!
Today we will discuss the subjects of pride and humility. What is pride? What is humility? Many cultures both ancient and modern have discouraged pride. They have regarded the expression of it as at best inappropriate and at worst evil. These cultures censure those who talk openly about their accomplishments or strive to distinguish themselves from others. They teach people to be aware of their flaws and not to try to seem better than anyone else. Conversely, other cultures have valued pride and the expression of it; they regard boasting as virtuous, and they esteem the visible signs of confidence and self-worth. They approve of the urge to show off, to stand out from the group, and to achieve a higher status than others.
Where does our culture stand between these two extremes? And to what extent do we as individuals value pride or humility? Is pride a vice, a virtue, or something else?
Join us this Wednesday night to discuss this topic. For the first half hour, we will settle in, eat snacks, and get to know each other. Then we will go around in a circle and share our initial thoughts on the subject. At last we will proceed to informal open discussion on it.
This meeting will be held in the Mayflower Room at the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor. Find the entrance about half way down the church on William Street. The correct door has to the right of it a small light flashing red and green. Enter, go up the ramp, and turn to the right. The Mayflower Room is just to the right of the kitchen. The doors of the Mayflower Room will be shut to keep in the air conditioning; turn the handle on the left door and push. We look forward to seeing you!
Please try to arrive on time. The doors to the church sometimes lock a bit after 7:00.
As with all the Delian Club’s events, this discussion is for autistic adults only.
