Details
This is a beautiful varied walk not to miss, going through scenic limestone dales, pastures, woodland and along winding river paths.
The walk starts in Tideswell Village, it has a rich history dating back to Pre-Roman Times. St John the Baptist church is situated in the centre of the village, built in the 14th Century, it contains impressive wood carvings and monuments.
Tideswell is noted for its textile industry with the nearby mills of Litton and Cresswell which once produced cotton.
Leaving Tideswell Village, the route goes across field pastures to join the Limestone Way and into Hay Dale.
Hay Dale is part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve and a designated site of Special Scientific Interest, rich with flowers and wildlife.
Coming out of scenic Hay Dale, our route enters Peter Dale, a crag sided valley with pastures on either side and beautiful views around us.
Our route emerges from Peter's Dale and joins the wildness of Monk's Dale which couldn't be more different to the scenic green Peter Dale..
The valley of Monk’s Dale Nature Reserve is an array of greens from different plants, trees and mosses strewn along the valley floor.
This is an opportunity not to miss and experience the real beauty of it during the Spring when we can see the Nature Reserve really come to life with birds and wildflowers.
Monk's Dale has become more wild with fallen trees and slippery limestone rocks strewn across the paths.
Monk's Dale is part of the Derbyshire Dales National Nature Reserve. Natural England manages the reserve which covers five separate dales of the White Peak, Lathkill Dale, Cressbrook Dale, Hay Dale, Long Dale and Monk's Dale.
The reserve contains ash and elm woodland and shrubs including herb Paris, bird cherry and dogwood. Uncommon flowers in the shady dale include dark red helleborine.
Native grasses include meadow oat, glaucous sedge, oat grass, cottongrass, knapweed and upright brome. Monk's Dale is also a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It is especially important for the lichens on the shaded, limestone cliffs.
Our route emerges from this woodland challenging adventure to Miller's Dale at the end of the Monsal Trail which is again totally different with riverside views and easy walking.
The Hamlet of Miller's Dale is a small settlement in an exceptionally beautiful section of the River Wye, where it winds through stunning limestone dales.
This tiny village in this wonderful location was once a junction on the Midland Railway between London and Manchester and an important centre for limestone quarrying.
The railway closed and the former track was restored as a pedestrian and cycling trail, the Monsal Trail, which runs for 8.5 miles from Chee Dale to Bakewell.
Leaving Miller's Dale, we head along the Monsal Trail to join the path down into the beautiful Tideswell Dale,
the foot of the valley of Tideswell Dale, leads into Miller's Dale and the brook runs into the River Wye.
It's an impressive limestone Gorge and nature reserve and home to an abundance of wildlife being a Site of Special Scientific Interest.
The peaceful walk through Tideswell Dale leads us back to Tideswell Village where we started this beautiful scenic walk through the Dales.
During the walk, we make sure everyone is ok with catching up points and breaks along the way. As well as supporting eachother, and taking our time to enjoy the beauty of our surroundings.
Enjoyment is first and foremost, as well as respecting slower walkers..
