Using Git in open-source projects

Details

Recently we talked about using Git at work. At work, you likely are on a team that all has permission to push to the repository. You might even be able to push to the main branch, even if you use pull requests.

Join us LIVE at 8:30 PM US Eastern Time (UTC -4) on Twitch or YouTube:

It is different in public open-source projects. Maintainers can't validate and update permissions for everyone who might want to contribute. In the open-source world, the pull request reigns supreme. This offers subtle differences in the git commands that you want at your fingertips to work effectively, offer your changes to the project, and to keep up with what's going on in the project while you've been working.

It's always a good time for a git refresher and we stick to the command line here. This should let you translate to whatever tooling you like, but we have some definite favorites.

If you've never seen us cover Git before, join us! We offer simple ways to think about Git that might be new to you, but they should help you feel more comfortable. Too many of us think of Git as strange or unusual, and it's just because of how it is presented to developers.
