How do we find clarity amidst conspiracies… (Philosopher's Bazaar event)

Details

Starting at a time when we would all fear what we don’t understand, or can’t explain such as volcanoes, earthquakes, lightning, thunder, pestilence, disease, droughts and floods we would generally feel safe with what we know and become creatures of habit. But there are those who grab the microscope, they explore the noises, they dig into the earth, they dive into the oceans.

Sadly though some people make up their own explanations, regardless of how little backing or foundation there is to it People would prefer a bad theory over no theory at all. We hate unexplained gaps and patterns. We fear the unknown. But after applying some basic critical thinking skills and delving into some armchair philosophy essentials, we explore how conspiracy theories can be dissected, debunked, reasoned away or at least better appreciated in a world full of lies, fake news and misinformation plus look at some basic human responses to these and why we sometimes act in this way.

Presented by Martin Coleman and Usha Sista at Philosopher's Bazaar.
