Drunken Historians' Society Presents: Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius

Details
Salvete, Drunken Scribes!
This May, our journey takes us deep into the heart of imperial Rome with Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius. Prepare for a wild parade of emperors—some noble, many depraved, all fascinating. From Julius Caesar’s calculated charisma to Caligula’s infamous madness, Suetonius offers a window into a world of power, excess, intrigue, and occasionally, very questionable hairstyles.
Translated with clarity in the Oxford World’s Classics edition by Catharine Edwards, this version keeps the spirit sharp and readable. Other translations are certainly welcome, but do keep in mind they vary widely in tone and detail—some bordering on Shakespearean, others more modern and crisp. Audio versions are available, though likely drawn from different translations.
We'll be gathering once more at State 48, this time in their private room—a quieter, more focused setting perfect for our discussion. Due to space constraints, this event is capped at 20 participants. There will be a wait-list if needed and dropout rates are usually around 50%. An entry fee of $5.00 will help tip our gracious server (separate from individual checks). You can pay in person or here: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/R3LU9TH8QEVC4
While this won’t be a fully immersive theme night (due to being at a public venue), Roman-inspired flair is encouraged! Don a tunic or laurel crown if the mood strikes you, and if you’ve got a Roman snack or drink to share, feel free to bring it along.
