Lightning Talks!

Details

Hi all! Let's do an evening filled with Lightning Talks ⚡ (or Short-presentations). I'm no expert in this, so please feel free to suggest improvements. Googling around seems to define Lightning-talks being between 5-10 minutes long and usually capped at 5 minutes. We can use a max of ~15 minutes instead?

Everybody is free to do their lightning-talk however they like, i.e., slides, no-slides, automatically advancing slides, showing code from your editor/IDE directly, etc. The plan is to have a fun and interesting evening with many different subjects, and hopefully it's also a nice way for people to practice presenting.

Update schedule for 21st of April

7 pm (*) - Drinks, pizza and snacks / social.
7.45 pm - Intro
8 pm - Lightning talks including:

  • Carl - Overview of new features to be added
    to C++ via SG14. (10m)
  • Ray - C++ Actor Framework intro / demo (10m)
  • Andrey - Where to put std::move? (<15m)
  • Aljar - Map Reduce in C++
  • Daniel - Policy Based Design (15m)
  • Maciej - Fast, stack based 'any' (15m)
    ~ 9 pm - Final drinks / social
    9.30 pm - The end (we can go to a pub nearby)

Hosted at Huxeley Associates

(Original text) - Thursday 21st of April is a Month from now.. so for a short presentation I hope this is enough time to prepare something. I hope you feel encouraged to prepare a talk.. I'm pretty sure it will be appreciated a lot! Timing will be the same, 8 pm (doors open at 7).

Thanks Jens Weller and also Hashim Mohamed for suggesting doing this.

Just some ideas..

  • If you want to have your slides reviewed leave a message/comment.. because I am pretty sure someone is happy to sanity check them.

  • We could also gather with those interested one or two weeks before the event at something like a Starbucks to review/discuss each-others slides.

  • If unsure whether you want to give a talk, you could consider preparing something and decide on the spot if you want to present it.

Naturally the levels of the talks will be different as not everyone is equally experienced!
