Jason Baxter is an award-winning photographer and author based in Edinburgh, with over 25 years of experience in media content creation.
Driven by a passion for capturing creative imagery that evokes emotion, serenity, and the raw beauty of nature, Jason goes to extraordinary lengths to find the perfect shot. His work has taken him to remote mountainsides in near-Arctic conditions, braving temperatures as low as -35°C in pursuit of the ultimate image.
This dedication has earned him prestigious clients, including BAA (7 large scale murals inside Edinburgh Airport), Historic Scotland, The National Trust for Scotland, and the European Union, for which he documented Outdoor Tourism projects in Ireland.
His first book, Edinburgh – A New Perspective, published by Birlinn in 2004, was chosen by Edinburgh City Council as the official civic gift for visiting dignitaries over a four-year period.
Today, Jason’s passion and commitment to his craft have led him to collaborate with Gleneagles Hotel in rural Perthshire, offering exclusive photography experiences for VIP guests. One such guest was film director Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption), with whom Jason spent a day in the Glencoe Valley, sharing insights and exploring the artistry of landscape photography.
### Topic of the Day: Exploring the Unique Photographic Opportunities of Cramond Causeway
We will delve into the stunning and ever-changing landscape of Cramond Causeway and the tiny tidal island it connects to. This location offers a unique blend of history, nature, and dramatic seascapes, making it a dream for photographers looking to capture something truly special.
#### Key Photographic Opportunities
Tidal Transformation – One of the most striking features of Cramond Causeway is its dramatic shift with the tides. At low tide, the path emerges, allowing access to the island, while at high tide, it disappears beneath the waves. Capturing this transition can result in stunning before-and-after compositions.
Island Landscape & Ruins – The small island at the end of the causeway is home to wartime fortifications and crumbling ruins, adding an element of history and mystery to your shots. The rugged terrain, combined with its windswept, isolated feel, creates a perfect setting for moody, cinematic photography.
Leading Lines & Reflections – The iconic row of concrete anti-boat pylons lining the causeway provides strong leading lines, guiding the eye through your composition. When the tide is low, shallow pools of water form, offering incredible reflection shots.
Weather & Light Play – The exposed coastal setting of Cramond makes it ideal for capturing dynamic skies and changing light conditions. Whether you’re aiming for a dramatic stormy seascape or a tranquil golden-hour scene, the interplay of clouds, sun, and sea ensures no two visits are the same.
