Natural Light Portraits

Details

Portrait photography holds a unique power to capture the essence of a person beyond their physical appearance. Through lighting, composition and expression, it reveals emotion, character and story in a single frame. A well-executed portrait can communicate vulnerability, strength, joy, or contemplation—offering a window into someone’s inner world. It also preserves moments in time, creating lasting connections between subject and viewer. Whether candid or posed, portrait photography celebrates individuality and humanity, reminding us of the shared experiences and diverse identities that make us who we are.

The first in a series I will run, this workshop will explore aspects of using natural light with portraiture in the stunning, picturesque Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. I will also supply reflectors and diffusers so that we can experiment whilst learning how to reflect, bounce and diffuse light to create various effects on our subjects.

For this workshop, we will be one another’s subjects, taking turns to pose for our fellow photographers. There is no obligation to model on the day if not comfortable but I would ask that anyone who does, bring along a simple prop i.e a hat, umbrella, sunglasses or item of clothing!

All are welcome, whether you shoot on a phone, are a complete beginner or have lots of experience…this will be an event where we can all learn together!
