"Elegantly dishevelled yet classically beautiful" is how Leith Theatre currently describes itself. Opened in 1932, it was bombed and badly damaged in 1941 forcing its closure for two decades. It reopened in 1961 and over the next 20 years regularly hosted EIF events and many of the era's headline bands. Essentially closing again in 1983, it limped on hosting Festival events for a further 5 years until doors were finally closed in 1988. It wasn't until 2017 that the theatre began to show signs of life again but much of what it can host has been restricted by health & safety issues linked to the need to carry out significant repair and building restoration work.
So we are visiting the theatre in the middle of the work being overseen by the Leith Theatre Trust to restore it to its original splendour. National Lottery funding and the securing of a 50 year lease has put this process on a much firmer footing.
After an initial introduction from a member of staff we will have unlimited access to most areas of the theatre and the adjoining hall. Bear in mind that it is a work in progress and is still very "dishevelled" in places so this should make for some varied and interesting photographs. Light levels in some areas may be challenging so a tripod may be advised.
The Theatre is directly behind Leith Library where Ferry Road meets North/Great Junction Street. We will meet outside the theatre.
Please note the earlier 12 noon start for the event.
At the request of the theatre I have put a limit of 20 attendees for this event. I know this is difficult for some but if you could confirm your attendance by Weds 3rd December it would be very helpful.
Refreshments afterwards are currently planned for Teuchters Landing on Dock Place - a 10 minute walk away. However, I will need to confirm this with the pub once I have a clearer idea of numbers.
